Hugh B. Cave wrote around 40 novels and well over 1,000 short stories in his 93 years of existence, right up to the time of his death as best I can tell. This review is based on the 1980 Dell printing of this book, which would have been written around the time that he was 70. It is slow moving and fairly subdued as a horror novel by today's standards, but enjoyable enough. It is a very easy read, and almost seemed to be aimed at a young adult audience. I'll soon be reading Death Stalks the Night, which is a collection of Cave's shorter stories written for the pulps, and Isle of the Whisperers, which I believe involves zombies. I'm hoping to enjoy those a bit more, and get the feeling that his earlier short pulp fiction may be more to my liking.
