I used this book on my September 2017 trip to Salzburg with my daughter-in-law. It was very helpful because it contains detailed instructions on how to get places by bus, train, and car. I lived in Salzburg in the late 1960s when attending the Uni, so I know the city well and have been back many times. Nonetheless I still found this book to have helpful hints and up to date information. That’s how good it is. I was able to find my favorite cheap eats place, the Bosna stand, which is hidden off in a side alley. I had forgotten its location, but it was the same delicious food I remembered so long ago. I especially liked the information about nearby destinations for day outings. If you are in Salzburg for just one day, you don’t need this book because the famous sights are obvious. But if you are there two or more days, I think it’s worth the investment.

Selfguided Salzburg The Sound of Music 2017 Brett Harriman 9781545297162 Books Reviews

I am not even halfway through the book and have already saved $1,000, based on Brett Harriman's suggestions. Not only that, I emailed him last night and he personally emailed me back and told me to call him with questions. Well, I called, and HE personally answered the phone and even though he was struggling to talk (due to a cold), within 1 hour and 15 minutes, (I felt bad, but I was to excited to let him go, hope he drank some hot tea with honey) he gave me numerous suggestions on where to stay, which train to take, and, due to the quality of his guidebook, reminded me that there was no need to take certain tours that I was going to book. He even asked me to email him my hotels and he'd make suggestions based on the location and points of interest. All without CHARGE! I can't wait to go to Europe and take his books!!

I also ordered guidebooks; "Berchtesgaden, Hitler's Eagle's Nest," and "Quest for the Bavarian Cross," pdf files of "Ludwig's Castles," at $1.29, and "Lest We Forget," which was free. He is working on Munich and Vienna guidebooks and I will purchase them when they are ready, for a good read, and, reference. He has others as well. Go to his website, harrimantravelbooks.com. You will not be disappointed. Even if you don't buy his books, you can gather a ton of info on the site.

I am a huge Rick Steves fan, but, this guy is even better! Can you get Rick Steves on the tele?

FYI I buy all the major travel books, and end up taking them all back except for Eyewitness Top 10, Rick Steves, and now, Brett Harriman. But, that's just me.
Like millions of people who love the movie the Sound of Music, I was touched by the movie. Two years ago I had an opportunity to tour a part of Europe. The itinerary included 3 days/2 nights in Salzburg, Austria. The one activity I participated in was the 4 hour Sound of Music (bus) Tour. It didn't dissapoint, although in retrospect, we saw only 3 movie sites the Gazebo at Helbrunn, the back of Leopoldskron Castle from the other side of the lake where Maria and the children fell into the lake, and the wedding church in Mondsee, a suburb of Salzburg in the lake district (Salzkammergut).
It was disappointing that the tour I was on made no reference to a local Sound of Music tour in Salzburg. One night for our tour-included supper we walked past two movie sites en route to the restaurant Residence Fountain and Residence Platz. We were not told that the sites were in the movie.
After the tour, I had a continuing desire to see more of the area, and struggled to obtain information that would be helpful...until I discovered the guide written by Harriman on . After purchasing a copy, I was impressed with the detail provided to negotiate a visit to the area. The whole book is specific to Salzburg and its enrivons.
It is thorough and provides many suggestions of different kinds of discovery tours (e.g. auto, walking etc.). For Sound of Music fans, this IS the bible for seeing the home environment of the von Trapp family and the movie location filming. My only suggestion for this guide book to become more of an academic reference is by 1)adding a glossary of German terms used in the guide, 2) an index of maps with descriptions, and 3) an index of names and places.
As movie director Robert Wise who won an Oscar for best director commented, "Salzburg is more than just a city where this story took place. It is an atmosphere."
