3.5 StarsI used to think I didn’t like books about angels, period. But then I read this one.
See, I don’t like when angels, as a whole species, are portrayed as cruel, terrible creatures. I also don’t like angel-demon wars with a broad scope that are more focused on good versus evil with martyrs for characters. But this book was neither of those things.
This book was about the characters, plain and simple. It was tightly focused on Izzy and Asher (who was a bit stalkerish but otherwise good) and their lives, their desires, and their emotions—just how I like my books.
Also, these angels weren’t guardians or warriors, they were reapers. They could do some battling if they had to, but their real job was to harvest the souls of those who die and send them off. I had never read about reapers before, but it turns out I find them a lot more interesting.
Now, moving on from my likes and dislikes when it comes to angels… this book was hilarious! You would think that, the love interest being the Angel of Death and all, it wouldn’t be funny, but it really was. Some of the scenes themselves were just fantastic, but each character was also funny in his or her own way, whether it was their sarcasm, teasing, jokes, behavior, or genuine thoughts. And because I can’t resist sharing some quotes… (The first is Izzy’s POV, the second two are Asher’s.)
"I tried to shove Asher away, but it was like moving stone. He intended to comfort me, and by God he was going to do it. Whether I wanted him to, or not."
"Taking great handfuls of his dark hair, she commenced to bash his head into the ground. Repeatedly. Such a delicate little flower."
But Grim (aka the grim reaper) was the most hilarious one of all. I loved him! He was cocky and playful and deranged and messed up in the head, but he owned it. He is who he is, so he just does his thing.
"Above me, blood and feathers fell nearly as heavily as the rain which lashed us. Clearly, Grim was keeping himself busy. He loved a battle. I could hear him laughing as he fought. Crazy b***ard."
I also liked the dual POV and was happy that the two voices actually sounded different. It brought a good balance and perspective to the story.
What I didn’t like so much though was that I wasn’t sure what exactly the characters were trying to achieve by the end. Maybe it’s a personal preference, but I like to know the goal in books, otherwise I feel like I’m meandering. I also would’ve liked more angst, but that’s definitely a personal preference. If you’re tired of angst, you’ll be happy to know the characters in this book are quite well-adjusted :-P There were also a few YA tropes, like the mean girl at school. But none of these were overwhelming or major issues.
Overall it was a book I enjoyed enough to continue the series, especially since I loved the humor and couldn’t resist knowing what would happen to these characters next!

Wings of Darkness Book 1 of The Immortal Sorrows Series eBook Sherri A Wingler Reviews
Wingler takes fantasy up a notch! I read a lot and the books begin to blur. This book had me hooked right away! I can't think of a single character that wasn't introduduced that wasn't a favorite! You simply didn't feel the need to get through the pages to "your character!" I rarely if ever read a book over, but until a new one comes out, this one could even make it to that level. The love story is sweet and yet beautiful and the "brother" relationship is as worthy! This is an author to watch for and a story that finally keeps your attention every single word!
An enjoyable story about a young car crash victim, Isabel, who survives her fatal injuries because the Angel of Death, Archer, doesn’t think her time has come. Archer continues to watch over and eventually she becomes aware of his presence. Because he has given her some of his divine blood, Izzy is no longer quite human but an unknown species that the immortals want to eliminate. A wonderful story that I hope to continue. Well-written with fantastic characters throughout.
I just can't explain how much I love this book. I especially fall in love with Ashrael. He is strong, sexy as hell and especially dangerous cause he the angel of death. Oh I will love die in the hands of a man like him if he looks the way I image. Isabel she is beautiful and caring. Isabel and Asher make a perfect couple. I just want to put Fate on the face for what she done to them. I hope he make her paid for what she done.
This book is reallllllllllly gooooooood.
You won't reading this book.
Can't wait to get my has on the next book.
This book was suggested in a book group and boy was I glad to have it pop up on my news feed. I admit that the angel caught my eye, nice choice for a cover model! Asher, the Angel of Death is a part of our plane of existence, but when he's in a crowd, no one really sees him and they all take measures to avoid him (he's kinda like the Knight bus from Harry Potter). Then when it's someone's time to go and they finally do look at him, they see who they wanna see or their worst nightmare. This is not the case with Isabel. She sees his true face, admits he's hot, but instead of falling in instalove, she stalkerzones him. I thought that was hilariously funny. I liked seeing her resist even though she was attracted to him. Girl got some sense in her for sure, that made for a fun time being in her head. Asher himself has POV chapters, which was a nice angle without too much exposition. His brother the Grim Reaper and her best friend Gwen added much comedic relief to the story also, not to say that Isabel isn't funny because she is. There's plenty of drama, adventure, action, and romance in this book - I can't wait to start the next one!
This book will not disappoint. It is a real page turner. I'm so ready for the next book because there are so many interesting things that I need to know more about. I don't want to give away the story so you will need to read the book and judge for yourself. However, I will say that Asher is deadly & powerful but so HOT. Isabel keeps exceeding the expectations with her gift & surprising everyone. Her best friend Gwen is very funny. She's the best friend every girl wants to have. She's brave, smart & funny. Grim is a royal pain but loyal to Asher. He's so super scary & full of himself but that is also part of his charm. He just kind of grows on you. I love the story so much that I can't wait to read the next book. Once I started to read I just couldn't stop. If you like adventure, paranormal romance & a sexy and mysterious yet dangerously handsome guy then you MUST read this book.
