The Blood Queen, the third book in the Deathsworn Arc series, is Stanley’s best yet. Now that we’ve established the dynamics between all the characters and get a feel for the world they live in, it’s much easier to relate and enjoy the story.I can’t believe it’s only been sixteen days since they set out to fight that dragon. It feels like months went by. They’ve been through so much already – battling a dragon, fighting verkreath – and they’ve all grown so much, on their own as well as together.
Their gang is joined by Elden Roth, who is cursed with a very special talent – he sings the truth, even about things he doesn’t know anything about. This made him intriguing from the very beginning. There’s also some mystery as to what exactly he is, because he’s certainly not fully human. I liked him from the very get-go because of that, and he only became cooler when he turned out to be a sarcastic guy. Instant win.
Three books in, we finally have an idea as to what the hell ‘Deathsworn’ is. It’s a very complicated oath which I will not expand further upon, but rest assured that it’s pretty cool.
While I talked profusely about how much I hated Vashni in the first book, I’ve actually grown to like her. She no longer humiliates everyone – rather she’s grown to trust her fellow travellers and has started to see them as friends, people she can trust. We therefore get more glimpses into her very long and complicated past. As someone who’s over a thousand years old, she has a lot of interesting stories, which was great to read about. There’s still a certain mystery about her, but there’s no doubt in my mind that she’s a fascinating character. On top of that, she’s also pretty badass.
Her Mir§ha/Ri§ine relationship with Korhan returns after being set on the backbench in The Verkreath Horror. Rather than it being degrading, they now have a mutual respect for one another which is pretty obvious in the way they interact.
Now that ‘the Truth’ is out, we see how each of the characters deals with that revelation. Especially Korhan, who’s recently lost one of his closest friends, dwells on it often. When 'the Truth' was revealed, I found it to be rather underwhelming, but now we get the full scoop of the consequences – not just on each of our characters, but on the entire Empire.
I found Saul to be a bit of a pansy in the previous two books, but he really stepped into the spotlight here. Although The Blood Queen was Vashni’s time to shine, Saul actually became useful here. We learn more about his past with Empress Jade and he becomes part of a rescue team. Kudos to Saul for being more than a prop.
Then there’s the matter of the Blood Trials. They’re hosted by the Empress and takes place in a big bowl. Two people fight with brashes – spiked weapons – until one of them falls, gives up, or dies. People join these Trials because it’s well worth it if you win – money, money, money. Korhan and Vashni join these Trials, each for their own reasons. The story behind the Trials is a brilliant one.
All in all, I found The Blood Queen to be more engaging than the other two. It’s intriguing and entertaining, and I’m a little annoyed that I have to wait so long for the fourth book.

The Blood Queen Deathsworn Arc Book 3 eBook Martyn Stanley Isis Sousa Jack Pedley Reviews
Entertaining lots of action
I am enjoying this series very much. The characters are so well written, it has been years since I have found a cast of characters I have enjoyed this much.
The story keeps the reader engaged with unexpected twists and turns. I am hoping the next books in the series will keep the same pace.
There seemed to be a mis-rememberance from when Brael was rescued from the chopping block and by whom in one of the conversations between Brael and Votrex. A few grammatical errors, but nothing really bad. According to some it seems that the third book is the last, but at the end of this one it says there is to be a fourth. Can anyone let us know when to expect it please?
Help! I think I have become thoroughly enchanted with these stories. As long as Martyn keeps writing this series I will keep reading, but I am sure at the end I will have to be rescued by A Gravian, dwarf , barbarian, magician and an elf.
I have to say I was very much disappointed in the direction the third book took. It seemed just to be written not to follow the action of the first two books and was really lacking in the action of the other books. I really was looking forward to them traveling to the dwarves Holt but instead stayed in a city for the entire book. It almost felt like it didn't belong in this series. Just my personal opinion. I like the authors storytelling abilities and the book is pretty much free of typos and dramatic errors. I'm would have been better off skipping to the next book to read about the visit to the dwarves city. Hopefully the next book will sooth my curiosity.
First off, my sincere apologies to Martyn Stanley. I'm sorry it has taken me forever to get this review up. So sorry Martyn!
The Blood Queen is the best of the three books in the Deathsworn Arc series. A better read. More engaging book than the others in the series. Finally we get an inkling of what 'Deathsworn' is! Outstanding! The group of characters have only been together for such a short time but have bonded as if they have spent much longer with each other. In this book we have from the beginning a firm grasp on the relationships between all the characters. Which enabled me to enjoy the story that much more.
I have to say that Vashni has become a very likable character. Who, even though I wasn't a big fan of in the previous books, has aways been a badass. Her interactions with Korhan are so much more satisfying due to the mutual respect they have for each other in this book. The introduction of the new bard like Elden Roth is just a win on every level. Cursed with having to sing the truth, even of things he knows nothing about. He's not fully human and a smart-ass to boot. A wisecracking alien.. Nothing better! D Not really sure what he is though.
In my opinion Saul was never much of a character. He didn't seem to be able to do much of anything. Always seemed so wimpy. I enjoyed seeing that he wasn't as inefficient in this book. We also get to learn about his past and his past with Empress Jade.
When The Truth was revealed I thought ummm...that wasn't much >.> I could sorta see it coming. In the Blood Queen we get to see that maybe The Truth isn't so underwhelming after all. We get to see how it is affecting not just the characters but the entire Empire. I won't say much about the Blood Trials, don't want to give anything away. Though I will say that the idea behind the Blood Trials is very clever.
Overall I found The Blood Queen to be a damn good read. Interesting and entertaining. I am looking forward to reading the next one. Write faster Martyn Stanley!
